Pigsties to golf courses Palelimnos is a mountain-plain to the southwest of Rethymnon. The plain is drained by the Petres Gorge that has its outlet at the popular beach of Petres to the west of Rethymnon. Palelimnos came under environmental purview because of an appalling pigsty that polluted the whole area with dirty effluents and ill smells. - The pigsty should go! That was the demand of the locals and of the mayor of the area.
- The pigsty should be relocated! That was the demand of the owner. The pigsty should be transferred to a higher location known as “Tis Nyfis ta Potamia” situated between Palelimnos and the village of Saitoures higher up. - Priority should be given to the protection of the landscape and the abundant ground water resources! That was the demand of the Environmental Organisation of Rethymnon that opposed both the relocation of the pigsty and the continuation of its polluting activities. Nothing of the like happened. Neither was the pigsty relocated, nor did it close down. What actually happened was that the area where the pigsty would have been relocated became candidate for the creation of a golf course. If so, the abominable pigsty of Palelimnos will soon be past. The same will happen to the agricultural character of the area. The large quantities of water required by the golf course will become unavailable for all the other activities. As the result, ground water will not be any more polluted by the effluents of the pigsty but from the large quantities of fertilizers and pesticides used to keep alive the grass of the golf course. Last but not least if some fears materialise pollution will eventually reach the sources of Argyroupolis tha supply Rethymnon with drinking water.
